We are currently in a transformational time for cellular connectivity,
and the future of ubiquitous wireless is emerging. Worldwide successes
in 2G and 3G have driven cell phone use to an incredible 6.8 billion mobile
devices. This makes mobile devices almost as numerous as the world’s population.
As we look to the next decade, wireless infrastructure will become even more
pervasive and even more integrated with every aspect of our everyday lives.
As we move to 5G, it is very likely that there will be changes in deployment
models, integration of multiple standards and usage scenarios. The deployment
models have emerged with small cells and heterogeneous networks, but will be
dramatically accelerated by new, virtualized deployment models. The path to full
5G feature set network is likely to generate a lot of optimized derivative LTE
versions for various vertical markets, like LTE-(Vehicle) V, LTE-(Machine)M,
LTE-(unlicensed)U, and LTE-LAA. The enhancement of the existing LTE products to
support LTE-x would highlight the flexibility and re-programmability requirement
of the future LTE equipment.
Francis recently attended Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona and will share
some of the new technologies he learned in the show as well.
Francis is the Vice President and General Manager of the Communications Business
Unit at Altera. He has been at Altera for 10 years, previously as Sr. Director of
Field Applications Engineering for North America, Director of Customer Marketing
in the Communications and Broadcast Division, and Sr. Manager of Corporate Development.
Prior to Altera, Francis managed a chip design team at Texas Instruments. He has
published and presented a number of papers in key conferences, such as IEEE ISSCC
and IEEE GLOBECOM, and has a number of ITU standard contributions for DSL. He has 5
issued and 1 pending US patents. Francis holds an MBA and an MSEE from University of
California at Berkeley, and a BSEE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
