Seminar 1: Empowering Your Team

Studies have shown that employee engagement is not an abstract feeling of making someone happy, rather it comes from aspects such as understanding the strengths of each individual on your team. Capitalizing on those strengths has been proven to yield stronger results in the workplace. We will focus on the development of leadership and management skills that support leading a team effectively and efficiently. We will learn some key leadership terms and how to understand communication both verbally and non-verbally. This will not only benefit you, but it will also leave your present or future diverse team feeling more energized than before!

Learning Objectives

  1. Understanding: Use fundamental understanding of human emotions to increase your team's productivity and output
  2. Talking/Explaining: Maximizing effective communication by identifying and articulating individual strengths in the workplace
  3. Social Conventions/Cultural Knowledge: Learning how to think differently about management topics you’ve previously discussed or experiences you’ve been exposed to
  4. Vocabulary: Create an accurate and personalized management/leadership glossary based on course topics and discussions

Coach: Rachel Zolotarsky

Rachel Zolotarsky, a Language and Communication Coach, is a passion-driven leader who is dedicated to lifelong learning and development. Rachel has held many leadership roles ranging from managing the nation’s largest student run conference to teaching beginner English in a classroom of over 100 adult and adolescent learners in rural Nicaragua. With over four years of leadership conferences under her belt, Rachel has won herself national awards for presentations on topics revolving around team management. Her particular passion and area of interest falls on emotional intelligence and how we can master that skill in order to be our best selves at work. When Rachel is not dedicating her energy to pinpointing what makes an individual unique in order to inspire their best work, you can catch her sipping on some green jasmine tea at the nearest local coffee shop.

Seminar 2: Pronunciation Master Class

When meeting somebody new, it’s important to give off the right impression. When we speak English (or any language), our pronunciation, along with our physical appearance, acts as a strong indicator. Where’s this person from? How long have they been in this country? Can I trust them to lead a meeting? Should I give them the promotion? Because whether we like it or not, people on the listening end are naturally going to judge those first few moments.

In this Pronunciation Master Class, we will attempt to compare the inherent sound structures of both Mandarin Chinese and American English. We will introduce English sounds that are commonly mispronounced by Chinese speakers, and we’ll actually explain why those mistakes happen. We’ll discuss ‘issues’ with the Pinyin transliteration system, and if there’s time, we’ll provide an overview of the rhythm and stress patterns of American English and see how it compares to the tonal, character system of Chinese.

You will hopefully come away with a new outlook on speaking and you should be able to implement any new discoveries right away. This guidance will not only help you make better decisions in your conversations, it will give you the supreme confidence to start any new conversation with ease!

Coach: Ruben Adery

Ruben Adery is a dialect coach and pronunciation specialist living in Los Angeles. Fluent in 5 languages, he has spent much of his adult life trying to perfect the natural quality of his accent in each language, as well as imitate many foreign accents in English, a fun technique he claims actually helps him with the languages. More importantly, he is continually developing new strategies to simplify and relate the learning process for anyone looking to build more confidence.

Ruben has been with Lingo Live for a year, and he focuses most of his efforts on perfecting pronunciation and appropriate word choice since the way you speak generates an identity that often represents your overall language ability.

He’s recently completed a Fulbright scholarship where he spent time developing the English language program at a federal university in Brazil, and he travels often to maintain connections and explore new cultures. When he’s not traveling, teaching or learning a language, he enjoys playing piano, guitar, and soccer.
