Realizing the limitations of camera and radar alone, a significant number of automotive OEMs have recently begun to include high-definition 3D LiDAR in the sensing suites for their Level 3+ automated driving projects. This is following in the footsteps of transportation-on-demand providers who, in their pursuit of Level 4 driving as a business necessity, understood the significance of LiDAR sensing much earlier.
We will provide an overview of the technology and how high-definition 3D LiDAR sensors were developed for the task of autonomous driving, but have found use in a variety of other markets. Market examples of its use will be shared, including robotics, mapping and autonomous driving. We will conclude with a look at what to expect from the next generation of high-definition LiDAR sensors.
