Talk Title:   Software Defined Building Design for a ZNE Building with a Nanogrid by Dr. Michael Hsieh
 
Talk Abstract:
This talk will start with one of the most effective ways for building a Zero Net Energy Building. With that understood, the discussion will turn to the benefit of following the practice of software defined building 
design as well as how to incorporate the nanogrids.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Michael M. Hsieh created Smart Grid Technology Series for UC Berkeley Extension by developing and teaching 7 new courses since the beginning of 2010. Before that, he has worked at Sun Microsystems Inc. for about 20 years where he and the design teams he worked with designed and delivered 3 generations of Sun’s servers and workstations for datacenters and cloud computing applications, and also designed and delivered 3 generations of UltraSPARC microprocessor chips that powered Sun platforms. Dr. Hsieh also spent 2.5+ years in designing director class Storage Area Network (SAN) switch for datacenters. Prior to joining Sun, Dr. Hsieh was a lead chip design engineer for multiple microcontroller chips intended for controlling the embedded systems, such as those for the modern day smart power grids
and Internet of Things, at Intel and Ford for 7+ years. Dr. Hsieh’s current interests include the design and realization of energy efficient infrastructure including Smart and Eco-friendly Cities, Smart Grids and Smart Microgrids,and Internet of Everything. Dr. Hsieh also works for US China Green Energy Council as a VP for Green IT Task Force and Education Program.

Second Talk Title:   Clean Technology 2016: Recent Trends and New Developments by Dr. William Kao
 
Talk Abstract:
As in every year Dr. Kao will present the most recent trends and new developments in clean technology including solar, wind, bio, hydro, geothermal, energy storage, and grid technology.
 
Speaker Bio:
Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for more than 30 years holding several senior and executive engineering management positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, Cadence Design Systems.
Dr. Kao has authored more than 40 technical papers on semiconductor design in IEEE Journals and Conferences, and holds eight US software and IC design patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided IC design.
Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was one of the founding members of IEEE-Circuits and Systems - Silicon Valley Chapter, where he was Chapter Chair in 2005 and 2006.
Dr. Kao currently teaches Renewable Energy, Clean Technology and Business Sustainability courses at the University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension.  He is a consultant for several Clean Tech and VC companies in Silicon Valley, and a Clean Technology consultant for the Chinese Government, for the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology, and for the Malaysian Government on new Emerging Technologies.
Between  2009-2015 Dr. Kao has authored and presented more than  50 talks, seminars, and short courses on the subjects of Clean Technology, Renewable Energy, Business Sustainability, and other Emerging Technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, Robotics, Internet of Things, Smart Cities  and 3D Printing.
Aside from technology Dr. Kao also frequently lectures on interdisciplinary education, soft skills, green MBA, and Chinese traditional philosophy (Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, Sun Tzu).
