Talk Title: "Green Housing and Business Opportunities" by Dr. Allen Chen
Talk Abstract
In his talk Dr. Allen Chen will cover the following:
1. Definition of sustainability
2. Why green housing? Government law and trends
3. Green housing points and certification.
4. Green housing opportunities for engineers
5. How to become a licensed green consultant

.

Speaker Bio: Allen Chen (Zero Net Energy Working Group, board of Directors) is a solar contractor (Lic #959986) with more than 10 years of experience in nuclear power and 15 years in the enterprise-level computer-related business. He studied at a National Taiwanese Oceanic University, majoring in marine engineering. Allen has worked in a variety of business fields including fax machines (1985), computers (1992), thermal printers (1997) and small electric vehicles, specifically electric scooters (2006). Allen's philosophy, as a solar contractor, the first step in a successful solar installation is to minimize power consumption and maximize efficiency by improving the quality of whole building envelope. Allen has obtained several licenses and certifications including C-46, CHEERS, HERS, BPI, LEED and green point rater. He is dedicated to preventing global warming, reducing the power consumption, and promoting
energy-efficient-building since 2007. He believes that only by keeping pace with the latest low energy consumption & green construction technology we will be able to differentiate from others and obtain trust from the customer. Dr. Allen presently works for Quanta Labs - Environmental testing Lab in Santa Clara, and is also involved with 4 nonprofit organizations:
1. California-China Green technology center as a technical advisor
2. Net Zero Energy Working group (NZEWG), board member to bring ZNE to reality by 2020
3. Commissioner for the affair between sister city of Hsin Chu Taiwan and Santa Clara County
4. California Energy upgrade spokesman in Chinese community

Talk Title: “An Overview of Green Building” by Dr. William Kao
Talk Abstract: Green Building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources- energy, water and materials - while reducing building impacts on human health and the natural environment, through better site, design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal, i.e the complete Building Life Cycle.
New technologies are constantly being developed to complement current practices in creating greener structures. In this talk Dr. Kao will cover the objectives, principles and benefits of green building, discuss green building features, technologies, materials and give a rundown on some interesting local green construction by companies such as Apple, Google, San Francisco 49ers Levi’s stadium, and SF Transbay Transit Center ( will be tallest building in SF), etc.

Speaker Bio: Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for more than 30 years holding several senior and executive engineering management positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, Cadence Design Systems.
Dr. Kao has authored more than 40 technical papers on semiconductor design in IEEE Journals and Conferences, and holds eight US software and IC design patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided IC design.
Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was one of the founding members of IEEE-Circuits and Systems - Silicon Valley Chapter, where he was Chapter Chair in 2005 and 2006.
Dr. Kao currently teaches Renewable Energy, Clean Technology and Business Sustainability courses at the University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension. He is a consultant for several Clean Tech and VC companies in Silicon Valley, and a Clean Technology consultant for the Chinese Government, for the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology, and for the Malaysian Government on new Emerging Technologies.
Between 2009-2015 Dr. Kao has authored and presented more than 45 talks, seminars, and short courses on the subjects of Clean Technology, Renewable Energy, Business Sustainability, and other Emerging Technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, Robotics, Internet of Things and 3D Printing.
Aside from technology Dr. Kao also gives frequent lectures on interdisciplinary education, interpersonal skills, financial investments, green MBA, and Chinese philosophy.skills, financial investments, green MBA, and Chinese philosophy.
